“…as you hold out the word of life, in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing” (Philippians 2:16).
George Whitefield, a great evangelist, was talking to some friends one day and relating the difficulties of ministry.
He explained that he was weary and was glad his work and ministry would soon be over.
He stated that he was excited to depart this old earth to be with Christ.
His friends agreed with him-
– all except for one, Mr. Tennant.
Noting his disagreement, Whitefield said, “Well, Brother Tennant, you are the oldest among us; do you not rejoice to think that your time to go home is near?”
Tennant answered bluntly, “I have nothing to do with death.
My business is to live as long as I can, and as well as I can, and serve my Saviour as faithfully as I can, until He thinks it’s time to call me home.”
So many people rush through life, speed through personal devotions, and pray with one eye open and glued to the clock!
But there is no excuse for you to feel life should speed by like a flash of light!
It is important to tend to your spiritual life before anything else.
Now is the perfect time for you to spend time studying God’s Word.
You can keep a journal of daily thoughts, memorize Scripture, counsel people, share Christ or use various Bible study books to provide a more in-depth study of a particular topic, book, or theme.
It’s never too late to learn new things, grow spiritually, or deepen your walk with the Lord.
When you begin to consistently walk with the Lord and spend time with Him-
– you’ll begin to see other areas of your life grow.
Ask God to help you deepen your walk with Him until He calls you home.
Pray that He would continue to put a desire in your heart to serve Him until that day.

We often think seconds are not very important.
But seconds tick away into minutes, minutes into hours, and hours into days.
We have all been amazed at how swiftly days turn into weeks, months, and years.
Think of it this way:
A 70-year-old has lived the equivalent of about two billion, two hundred seven million, five hundred and twenty thousand seconds!
While you read that last sentence-
– about five seconds of your life elapsed, and you can never go back and decide to use them differently.
As small as they are, seconds are precious because they are a creation and a gift of God.
How we use even these small time increments makes a difference.
Since our heavenly Father has a plan for each life—that we live for His purpose and His will-
– then we must consider how we spend not just years, months, and days, but even minutes and seconds.
And the time to decide is now-
– before any more of your life passes by.
Understanding the value of each moment, the apostle Paul urged us-
“Be careful how you walk… making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians. 5:15-16.

In essence, he is instructing us:
“Take advantage of every opportunity God gives you. Don’t waste your time!”
Let Jesus be your role model for keeping a balanced schedule.
He knew that spending time with the Father was the most important thing He could do.
Follow His example, and begin each day in the Father’s presence.
He will help you
arrange your schedule and can make every second count.

“My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle….” (Job 7:6).
Where are we going so fast?
Scientific measurements indicate that we are moving even when we are standing still.
Continental landmasses sit on enormous slabs of rock that slide very slowly at the rate of 1 to 8 inches per year.
In addition, America is gradually moving westward, away from Europe, at the rate of 3 inches per year.
Consider this:
Our Milky Way galaxy is hurtling through space at 375 miles per second or 1.3 million miles per hour.
And within our own galaxy, the sun and its solar system are zooming along at 12.4 miles per second toward the star Vega in the constellation Lyra.
If you were to lie on your back in a quiet park on a cloudless day, you may feel as though all time and movement have stopped under the warm rays of the sun.
And when you’re walking down the street, you don’t notice the earth spinning beneath your feet.
But the scientist and the Christian know otherwise.
Just as we are hurtling through the heavens at unimaginable speeds according to science, so, too, are we moving from here to eternity.
Our days and opportunities to live for the Lord and share Him with others pass so quickly that we cannot afford to waste any more time.
It is important that we remember our days are numbered.
And life is but “a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14.
Time is God’s gift to you-
– so worship Him, live for Him, and bring others to the saving knowledge of His grace and forgiveness in the days you have left.
Live dynamically for Christ today because tomorrow may not come.
Ask the Lord to help you live without desperation or futility-
– as you travel quickly from your earthly home to your heavenly home.

Sometimes there aren’t enough minutes in a day-
– or days in a year—for all our work.
Well, then, how would you like to have a 445-day year?
It happened once!
The early Romans established their calendar on a lunar model, and their year had only 355 days.
In 46 B.C-
Julius Caesar mandated a new solar calendar, making the year 365 days long.
To bring the new calendar on track, he added two extra months to that year, sticking them between November and December.
And he also squeezed three extra weeks between February and March.
The result was a one-time-only year of 445 days-
– which became known as the “Year of Confusion.”
Sometimes every year seems like a year of confusion.
But the secret to getting all your work done isn’t adding days to the year-
– it’s doing only what the heavenly Father has ordained for you.
When Jesus ascended to heaven-
– there was still much work to be done,
– yet He said: “I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” John 17:4.
Ask God for His agenda each day!
And don’t let the urgent usurp the important.
Make sure to finish the work He gives you day by day.
Place all the hours of this day quite simply at His disposal.
And ask Him to make and keep you ready to do just exactly what He appoints.

“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).
Chuck Colson tells about one prisoner-
– he met who had been on death row for fifteen years..
His name was John Irving.
John was allowed out of his cell for only one hour a day.
The rest of the time he was studying to become a minister, preparing to serve God.
Noticing that John had nothing in his cell but a few books, Colson offered to give him a TV.
“Thanks,” John said, “but I cannot waste my precious time with that.”
Can you imagine wasting time on death row?
Colson goes on to say:
“The real evils of the entertainment industry are not the violence and profanity—offensive though they are.
No, it’s the banality:
the sheer waste of time.
When we turn the TV on, we turn our minds off; studies have shown that the analytical areas of the brain nearly shut down during extended TV viewing.”
Learn to use your time wisely-
– including quality time with your loved ones
– and making time to take proper care of yourself with adequate rest and relaxation
– and taking time to fellowship with God.
