“O LORD, revive your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy” (Habbakuk 3:2).
Over the years I’ve often got emails asking:
“When do you think revival will come in our country?”
What is “revival”, exactly?
One of Merriam-Webster’s definitions is:
-“a renewed attention to or interest in something”.
Revival begins with you!
A key aspect of world revival is revival within ourselves.
Here are some important questions for us to answer today:
How interested are we in praying to the Lord and truly worshipping His Holy Name?
How interested are we in growing in God’s truth and knowing Him deeply?
How interested are we in gaining a greater knowledge and understanding of His Word?
And just how interested are we in sharing those precious things with the dying world around us?
And it’s not just a one-time thing, either!
Revival is something that needs to happen daily.
It’s an ongoing transformation of our hearts to be constantly moved by the Spirit of God.
We need to be daily breaking up our fallow ground-
– those places in our hearts which we’ve allowed to grow hard.
We have to ask the Lord to reveal those hard places, pray that He would forgive us and ask Him to heal all our rough edges that we might be soft before Him and sensitive to His leading.
Let’s get serious about getting ourselves revived!

“For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants”  (Isaiah 44:3).
As I’ve been studying revivals for the past few weeks-
– the Lord has been revealing two recurring themes!
First-
He has often used obscure and unknown individuals to lead revivals,
– and that even these men whom He used so powerfully never considered themselves to be “special”, but often wanted to stay out of the limelight.
Secondly-
I haven’t read a story about a revivalist who did not first go through a personal revival himself!
Revivals were not sparked until these men went through a season of personal desperation and yearning for the fire of God.
And only after this season were they used of the Lord to change their generation.
How does this speak to us, obscure, unknown individuals?
It shows us that a true and deep hunger for God can grow into a significant and powerful calling on our lives-
– a specific mission which God Himself will empower!
It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, old or young, educated or uneducated-
– each of us has a potential destiny to accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God!
But in order to go on and do those awesome works in His name-
– we need to be in a state of revival!
Let us seek hard after our own personal revival!
We’re alive for such a time as this-
– to be spirit-filled vessels of revival to this lost and dying world!
Press in, press on, and go forth in His power-
– because there is so much work to be done!

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” (Acts 2:38-39).
One of the greatest moves of God took place in 1727 on the estate of Count Zinzendorf.
Count Zinzendorf was a strong believer who was deeply influenced by the faith of his grandmother and aunt.
At the tender age of 22, he opened a portion of his estate to refugees seeking asylum from the religious persecution throughout Europe.
After five years, this fledgling settlement of three hundred was growing.
But in the midst of their growth, divisions were arising among the brethren over doctrinal issues.
Then on May 22, 1727, the Moravians made a covenant with Zinzendorf whereby-
– they committed themselves to the Lord,
– confessed the sin of religious quarreling, and
– “sincerely renounced self-love, self-will, and disobedience…deciding, each one,
– to be led by the Holy Spirit in all things.
Later that same year, on August 13th, after a week of fasting and prayer, the Moravians whose average age was around 30, were gathered, when an outpouring of the Holy Spirit took place.
Count Zinzendorf called it the Moravian Pentecost!
This led to over one hundred years of continuous prayer, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which supplied spiritual power to one of the longest sustained outreaches the world has ever known.
The Great Awakening led by the Wesley brothers that took place in the United States and England was a direct result of this revival.
In 1867, one of the earliest missions established in the Modern State of Israel was also fruit of this move of God.
So what can we learn from this amazing revival?
First-
– it began when the brethren laid down their differences and came together in prayer, determined also, to lay down their lives for the Gospel’s sake.
Secondly-
– the outpouring of the Spirit is always connected to spreading the Gospel in power,
– which leads to widespread radical change in the world of that generation.
Let’s be stirred with a sense of urgency, also….to lay down our differences as believers, and then lay down our lives for the Gospel, so we can be eagerly expecting to be renewed with the power of God…not only for our own spiritual quickening, but for all the souls who have yet to receive this awesome gift!

Someone has said that an archaeologist is a person who makes his living digging up dead people.
If you lived in Israel today-
– you might believe that is true.
Israel is bustling with archaeological activity.
Professionals and volunteers are digging up mounds of past civilizations, finding pottery, coins and, occasionally, human bones.
They gather the artifacts carefully-
– but they do not anticipate that the pottery will ever again be used for cooking or the coins for trading.
And they certainly do not anticipate that those dry bones will ever live again.
Not so with the Lord God!
He called the prophet Ezekiel to a valley full of dry bones and asked, “Can these bones live?”
Ezekiel was cautious in his response: “O Sovereign LORD, you alone know” (Ezek 37:3).
God was promising that the nation Israel, which was all but obliterated due to enemy invasion, would one day live again.
For almost 20 centuries Israel did not exist as a nation.
There was no Jewish homeland.
The Hebrew language all but died out.
And then God performed a miracle.
He gathered Jews from all over the world and brought them to Palestine, and in 1948 the modern state of Israel was born.
It was proof that, just as He had predicted to Ezekiel-
God would not abandon His people forever.
God keeps His promises-
– even in a valley full of dry bones.
“Thank You, Heavenly Father, for being a God of integrity.
Thank You for bringing Your people back to their land and for giving us one more example that You are a God of Your word.”

“Now the glory of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim, where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple” (Ezekiel 9:3).
There is a certain sadness in my heart when I see restaurants, bookstores and antique and furniture stores that obviously used to be churches.
People of God had sacrificially given to build that structure and had gathered there, joined together in ministry.
Sometimes a cornerstone remains, inscribed with words such as, “Dedicated to the glory of God.”
Reasons for the change vary, for sure.
Some churches relocate to new facilities-
– but sometimes the building is empty because the church no longer exists.
The ministry there is over.
Among the saddest images in my mind is that of a sign in the front yard of a church.
It simply said, “For Sale by Owner.”
The ministry there was going, going, gone.
Ezekiel describes over a series of three chapters a vision of the glory of God departing from the temple in Jerusalem.
The glory moved from above the cherubim (9:3),
– to the threshold of the temple (10:4),
– to the east gate (10:19),
– and finally out of the city (11:23).
It was a slow, sad departure of the glory, unseen except by the prophet.
Our heart’s desire should be that the Lord’s glory remain in our churches!
That will take more than just wishing.
It requires staying true and faithful to God and to His Word.
When we move away from-
– correct interpretation,
– clear teaching,
– careful application and
– commitment to His Word,
– then we move closer to a time in which the glory may leave.
Be a people of the Book!
Read the Word, learn the Word and live the Word.
“God, help me and my local church to stay true to Your Word.
May Your glory continue to be proclaimed through me and my church.”

Over the years I’ve often gotten emails asking “Do you think revival will ever come to us? When do you think it will come?”
The key aspect of world revival is revival within ourselves.
Revival must begin within each of us!
And it’s not just a one time event but an ongoing process of desiring to be closer to Him.
Once, a lady asked Billy Sunday “Why do you keep having revival meetings?”
And he quickly retorted, “Why do you always take a bath?”
Revival is an ongoing transformation of our hearts to be constantly moved by the Spirit of God.

Only then will we be changed and be in a place where we can contribute to revival around us.
Let’s allow God to work in us and through us!
