Two people can look at the same thing, at the same time, and see things differently.

An old table in a dumpster looks like trash to one, a treasure to another.
One set of fans at a championship game will see triumph, the others tragedy.

On the Mount of Olives that first Palm Sunday-
– two saw the same scene differently.

The disciples saw the triumph of the moment, while Jesus saw the tragedy.
“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it.” Luke 19:41.

Jesus saw tragedy that day, not triumph.

The tragedy had three parts.

First, the people wanted peace but did not know what would bring peace to them.

True peace is found only in Jesus.

Second, they did not realize the destruction they faced.

A few years later Rome captured Jerusalem, killing more than 600,000 people and destroying the temple.

Jesus also knew that all face judgment unless they receive the forgiveness He can give.

Third, He wept because they did not “recognize the time of God’s coming.” v.44.

God became a man and lived among us–Immanuel!

Yet many did not recognize that and instead rejected Him.

A few days after Palm Sunday the cries of “Hosanna!” became “Crucify him!”

Jesus wept because the people did not know peace, realize they faced destruction or recognize that He was God.

Do you have peace?

It is found in Jesus.

He saves us from sin’s power and penalty.

Recognize who Jesus is and receive Him as your Saviour today.

Hosanna!

“The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior.” Then Gideon said to him, “O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? …the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” The Lord looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” (Judges 6:12-14).

At first Gideon questioned this angel of the Lord and complained about his circumstances.
How could God really love Israel?
How could God really care about Gideon when they were all in such distress, danger, and poverty?

Gideon did not yet know to Whom he was speaking.
This angel spoke as Jehovah Himself, and when Gideon finally realized he’d been discussing politics and religion with God—face to face—he was rightfully terrified:
“Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.”
The Lord said to him, “Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die.”

Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and named it The Lord is Peace.6:22-24.

When Gideon’s eyes were at last opened to see that the Lord had taken a personal interest in his situation, that God was present with him in the midst of all this darkness and fear, he worshiped the Lord by a new name- Jehovah-shalom, The Lord is Peace!

In the days to come-
The Lord was going to put Gideon in some very unpeaceful situations.

In some ways Gideon would face more stresses and challenges than he had ever faced in his young life.

But no matter what happened from this point on, Gideon could look back to an altar.
He could look back at a moment in time when Jehovah-shalom said to him, “Peace to you, do not fear.”

Do you ever feel as if you’re trying to thresh wheat in a winepress?
Surrounded by enemies who press in on you and try to steal every grain of peace and gladness out of your life?

Do you ever begin to wonder where your God is in the midst of your hurts and hardships?
We cannot base our peace in the circumstances and situations of life.

We must not let our peace be centered in another man or woman-no matter how dear they are to us.

We dare not allow peace to depend on sunny skies, a full stomach, a balanced checkbook, a healthy body, or a harmonious home.
Like Gideon, we need to discover that God is Jehovah-shalom!

“He Himself is our peace!” Ephesians 2:14.
Once you really understand this and worship God as Jehovah-shalom-
You can have peace no matter what storms sweep over the horizon.
Jesus told His disciples this very thing in the last few hours before the Cross.

These men were in terrible turmoil, and things were about to get much worse.

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you.
Do not let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:27.
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”.John 16:33.

Where do you run when you need peace?
Is your first response to go looking for a person or to pick up the phone?

Before you do that-
Run into the shelter of His name!

Because-
He is your Peace!

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him” (Psalms 62:5).
It never ceases to amaze me-
– the way the devil uses our offenses and our “offendedness”,
– to divide and conquer marriages, relationships, churches — even entire nations!
Many of us are not careful enough about the things we say.
And more importantly, we get offended way too easily.
If you are holding a baby and his little arm swats you in the face-
– would you take offense to that?
Of course not!
We know the little guy didn’t intend to hurt us.
We respond with laughter or something to that effect.
But if it is a friend, a family member or a brother or sister in the church who offends us with a little swat of his words or actions-
– we are undone!
We expect more from them!
We become angry.
We want to defend ourselves.
We fight back or leave forever.
Jesus said NO!
He said that even if someone despitefully uses us, that means on purpose, that we are to respond in love!
We as human beings are troubled and sinful.
We are not perfect and we should never expect others to be-
– no matter what their positions are in the church.
God is perfect.
And He is the one from whom our expectations should come!
Not man.
We are all guilty of this one way or another.
Let’s give our offenses to the Lord.
Allow Him wash over us today.
Allow Him Heal us.
Allow Him get us back to where we need to be.

“…And your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15).
Feelings of stress are caused by the body’s instinct to defend itself.
This instinct is good in emergencies, such as getting out of the way of a speeding car.
But stress can cause unhealthy physical symptoms if it goes on for too long, such as in response to life’s daily challenges and changes.
Dr. Joel Elkes said, “Our mode of life – the way we live – is emerging as today’s main cause of illness.”
The American Academy of Family Physicians says that two-thirds of all visits to doctors are stress related-
– and that stress is now known as the major contributor to heart disease, cancer, accidental injuries, and suicide.”
People attend stress seminars and devour books on stress.
Sometimes they find that just focusing on it makes them more uptight.
But, let’s face it!
Stress and pressure are a part of life.
Even Jesus Christ promised us that we’ll all face it.
He said, “In this world you’ll face much tribulation.”
Tribulation also means pressure.
He goes on to say, “…but take heart. I have overcome the world.”
Jesus does not promise us freedom from pressure.
But He does promise us peace amidst the stress.
Inner peace is a by-product of knowing Christ as Saviour and Lord.
The good news is, it’s available to all who trust in Him.
Pressure is a part of life.
But Christ gives us peace amidst the pressure!
