Jesus tells us that one of the “signs” His coming is-
– an increase in false prophets.
That is surely true in our day.
We hear about the Health and Wealth Gospel or Prosperity Theology-
– and the thousands of preachers saying you give to God in order to get.
Or, if you really pray hard enough-
God will heal your disease.
Give money to this or that ministry and you’ll get rich.
It’s this false idea that God won’t let you suffer and wants you to be rich.
It really should be called The Gospel of Greed.
It is false teaching that has permeated the church.
It’s taking a certain passage of scripture and building your whole life around it-
– while ignoring all other kinds of passages that give us the full picture of God’s truth.
So, how can you keep from being deceived by a false prophet or leader?
The key is in knowing Jesus and His Word.
Then ask the question:
Is what this person saying consistent with Jesus and His Word?
“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26).
If you are a Christian-
– you have an added bonus:
The Holy Spirit that dwells in you teaches you how to understand the Word-
– and gives you a check in your spirit when something doesn’t ring true.
Christians!
It’s time to be careful!

“An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end” (Proverbs 20:21).
What motivates people to gamble or to buy lottery tickets?  Some will tell you it’s the thrill of the game.  Others will say it’s just for fun.
The ones who are really honest will tell you the truth: It’s an opportunity to get a big return for a little investment.  Something for nothing.
Shortcuts to success hold tremendous appeal.
In fact, some folks spend more energy on doomed “get-rich-quick” schemes-
– than they would if they simply resigned themselves to working for a living!
They’re always looking for their big break, the opportunity of a lifetime.  As someone has said, though, “Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them!”
Are you obsessed with getting things for nothing? Do you find it hard to be patient until you can afford something? Do you have a tendency to use other people for your own gain? Can you persevere with hard work over a long period of time?
Here’s a fact of life:  Things bought without a cost are usually worth exactly what you pay for them.
Don’t waste your energy looking for shortcuts!
Trust God’s timing.  He’ll see that you get what you need when you’re ready for it.
What might be God’s purpose for making us wait a while for our ship to come in?
Read Up: Hebrews 11:8-16, James 5:7-8.

And that makes all the difference.
As long as our focus is on-

On the other hand-
When we view money as a tool for accomplishing good-

That attitude frees us to use money as God intended-
– to provide for our needs,
– but also to provide for others.
Jesus addresses the bottom line.
“You cannot serve God and money” (Matt 6:24).
Are you the master of your money?
Or is your money your master?
Master or slave?
The choice is yours!

“Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).
An excessive desire, especially for wealth or possessions, is called “greed.”
You may not realize this.
But greed is as old as time.
Jesus told the parable of a rich man who had had such a good year that he had run out of places to store his crops and other treasures.
He decided to solve this “problem” by building bigger and bigger barns so he could have a place for all his new stuff.
With all these new riches, he reassured himself that he could take it easy and spend the next few years eating, drinking, and living the good life.
Sounds pretty enticing, doesn’t it?
One day he sat back and thought he had everything he needed and much, much more.
Or did he?
Don’t think so.
I doubt he realized God was getting ready to say to him:
“You fool – didn’t you realize that this very night your soul would will be required of you?” (Luke 12:20).
This man was too busy hoarding his wealth to realize that it was God who had entrusted him with all that wealth.
In fact, the man was quite sure he had done it all by himself.
How wrong he was!
He was rich in the world’s eyes-
– but poor in God’s eyes and it led to a pitiful entry into eternal poverty!
Life is so short.
It will be over before you know what happened.
What treasures have you laid up in Heaven as a Christian?
Remember:
The need to have more than you “need” equals greed.
There is nothing wrong with having wealth-
– as long as you realize it all really belongs to God and you use it to further His kingdom.
Being rich in your relationship with God through Jesus Christ – now, that is a richer way to live – forever.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
Let’s suppose Jesus walked up to you and said:
“I want to see your books. Let me see your investments, your paychecks, and your checkbook. I want to see how you’re spending your money.”
If Jesus looked at all of that would He then say-
“Salvation has truly come to this house? I can tell where your heart is by how you manage your money?”
Or would He look you in the eye and say-
“I know your profess to be a Christian, but there’s nothing in the books indicating that you are. You know, you may profess to be a follower of mine, but in reality, you’re in bondage to your money, to your possessions.”
I can also imagine Jesus adding, “But I have good news. If you will trust Me for salvation, I will give you the Holy Spirit to empower you with an “inner want-to” to become a good manager of what I entrust to you. If you will trust Me fully, I will put you on the road to financial freedom, where you will no longer be living in financial slavery so evident in your books! Won’t you trust Me?”
That’s the question-
Jesus is asking you today.
Do you trust Him-
– especially when it comes to all the money and possessions He’s entrusted to you?
Or are you afraid to let it go?

We meet people and get mails all the time from organizations asking for donations.
And we just get confused.
We want to help.
But how do we decide where we ought to give?
We can’t support everything.
And we know our little bit doesn’t make much difference anyway.
Do you remember the widow in the Bible who only had two very small coins to give to God’s work?
In the eyes of most people her gift was useless.
But Jesus commended her to His disciples:
“This poor widow has put in more than all the others” (Luke 21:3).
Why did Jesus say this?
One reason was because in God’s eyes it wasn’t the size of her gift that mattered-
– but her attitude of sacrifice and love for God.
In addition-
Jesus knew that God could take even the smallest gift and use it for His glory.
And the same is true for us.
If Christ is first in our lives, our desire will be to support His work in every way we possibly can.
Is this your goal?
Ask God to guide you in your giving!
You can’t support every cause that comes your way-
– nor should you try.
But you can seek God’s will for your giving-
– asking Him to direct you to give to those that need it most.
Because-
-it is not your money,
– but God’s money you are giving Him back.
Pray too for those organizations-
– that God will help them use their resources wisely and carefully.
Above all, seek to follow the Bible’s teaching in your giving:
“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
May this be true for you!
And it will be, as you put God first in your life!
