Recently, I’ve been studying the Jewish roots of many of Jesus’ parables.
And I came across an interesting saying from a Jewish Rabbi that I believe has something to teach us.

Rabbi Eliezer said, “Repent one day before your death.”

His disciples asked him, “Does then one know what day he will die?”

“Then all the more reason to repent today”, he replied, “lest he die tomorrow, and thus his whole life is spent in repentance.”

When I first became a believer-
I thought by simply dealing with my outward sins that I could live a state of sinlessness.

But it wasn’t long before the Lord began revealing and dealing with my inward sins and attitudes.

Now, and the longer I walk with Him, I understand more and more the meaning of daily repentance!

If we truly want to be free and walk in His liberty-
– we cannot avoid this crucial requirement for freedom.

Because we cannot receive His forgiveness without it-
– repentance must be a way of life for us. 1 John 1:9.

Staying close to the Lord is His heart’s desire for us-
– but one of the main conditions for it is walking in regular repentance.

When we walk in humility and truthfulness about our sin-
– we are walking in the light, and the blood of Jesus keeps cleansing us from sin.

So, let’s lay down our pride and turn to Him every day, with genuine repentance!

“The one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).
God is no pushover!
His call to holy living is-
– very clear,
– very firm,
– very hard to misunderstand.
Let’s not trick ourselves into thinking that-
– His heart of compassion has made Him soft on sin.
But rest in this:
“He knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14).
He understands the bad habits we’ve moulded over the years, the comfortable corners we run to when we’re tired or upset or discouraged.
The truth is:
The anger we feel pressing down on us is more ours than His!
-for while we could kick ourselves for caving again,
He’s heartbroken that we’ve sold ourselves out so cheaply-
– that we’ve chosen the path of pain,
– when He has offered us the path of peace!
So as you catch yourself in compromise, confess your blunders!
And promise (with God’s help) that you’ll turn your back on this foolishness.
Confession gets your sin out in front where you can deal with it!
Repentance takes it out to the curb where God can haul it off with the rest of your garbage-
– and leave you feeling clean again!

“Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.Your sins have been your downfall! Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: “Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips.” Hosea 14:2.

How do we deal with demandingness?

We must repent of it.

Our passage today tells us how.

First:

Return!

“Return to the LORD.”

The key to ridding ourselves of anything that is spiritually injurious is to return to God.

The pursuit of God involves a shift away from dependence on one’s own resources to dependence on God.

Doing good and correcting wrong behavior does not automatically make us good people.

Obedience is extremely important, but it must be accompanied by deep, heart repentance.

Second:

Repent!

The passage says: “Take words of repentance with you.”

This phrase means that we must put into words a clear description of what we are repenting of.

If we are not clear about what is going on inside us, how can we repent of it?

Next:

Receive!

“Forgive all our sin.”

Repentance puts us in touch with God’s forgiveness.

We can work to bring about change also-

– but the greatest catalyst for change is humbly positioning ourselves before God and asking for His forgiveness.

Then:

Rejoice!

“Accept what is good, so that we may repay You with praise from our lips.”

The thought here is:

“Receive us that we may worship You more effectively.”

The purpose of all restoration is to worship God.

We will be drawn into true worship when we give up insisting on our own way and learn to trust God for our own happiness.

When repentance moves us from a spirit of demandingness to absolute trust in God-

– then we are in the place where God is able to make our feet like “hinds’ feet,”

– and equip us with the ability to ascend into the heights with Him.

“Tender and skillful Invader of my heart, I yield my stricken being to You for healing. Drain every drop of demandingness from my being. For I want not only to be better but to be whole. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

worship 1If you have ever watched soldiers doing close-order drill on a parade field-
– you know how quickly they can reverse themselves and head in the opposite direction.
If they attempt this while standing still-
– the command is “about face.”
If they want to reverse while marching-
– the command is “to the rear, march.”
In either case, there is an abrupt change leading in an entirely different direction.
This is a good picture of what genuine repentance looks like.
It means to change one’s mind and start moving the opposite way.
One of the Bible’s greatest preachers of repentance was John the Baptist-
– who called his hearers to a complete “about face.”
He had seen too many shallow gestures where people pretended to repent-
– but were not willing to change their behaviour.
John insisted that those who exhibited only superficial contrition should instead “bear fruits in keeping with repentance.” Luke 3:8.
When his listeners asked what he meant by that-
– they were told to share their food and clothing,
– to be fair in their business practices,
– and to be content with their wages.
In other words-
– they were to change their ways and
– leave their old patterns of behaviour behind.
Repentance includes something else
also: A willingness to make restitution to anyone whom we have wronged.
When Zaccheus the tax collector received Jesus into his house-
– he showed the true nature of his repentance when he said,
“If I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.” Luke 19:8.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any amends you may need to make.

When a nation loses its ability to discern morality-

Especially when it comes to basic sexual morality.
When a nation turns its back on the commands of God-
He will say, “That’s the last step. I wash My hands. You asked for it. You got it.”
Our country is in a crisis-
– and unless we have a moral rebirth,
– we will join the graveyard of the nations.
It’s time to wake up.
Time is passing.
It’s time to look up.
Jesus is coming.
It’s time to sober up.
Satan is working.
It’s time to pray up.
Mountains need moving.
Ask the Lord to heal our land-
– forgiving the iniquities of the wicked by bringing salvation to their souls.

“Jesus answered and said…if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.” Matthew 21:21.

Perhaps we should make a list of the “lost words of Christianity.”
It seems like some things are not talked about as much today.
“Worldliness”, for instance, is a forgotten word, erased from usage by an overemphasis and sometimes misapplication of Christian liberty.
Sin and some of the classic words for it have been dropped from the vocabulary.
Adultery is an “affair” or a “fling,” for example.
Seldom do we hear the word “repent.”
Repentance implies the need for change.
Something is not right; actually, something is wrong.
The tendency today is to teach how God can meet man’s need-
– and not so much about how man needs to change.
The concept that God would judge is foreign to the minds of some people-
– yet is essential to His nature as a God of justice and righteousness.
To the people of Israel, God sent Hosea, a man who became a living parable of repentance and return.
His story is shocking:
He was married to a prostitute whom the Lord commanded to love as the Lord loved the Israelites (Hosea 3:1).
The reality of Hosea’s marriage teaches us the reality of God’s love for His wayward people, for us.
We are told, “‘Come, and let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our  wounds'” (Hos 6:1).
That is not what people may want to hear!
But it is what we need to hear!!
God will work in our lives-
– sometimes in forceful and unpleasant ways.
His goal is not to destroy-
– but to bring us back to Him.
Examine your life and think about areas in which God wants you to change.
Repentance is not just something of the past.
It needs to be a part of our present!

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:19-21).
The word for “restitution” in this passage is the Greek word-
“Apokatastasis”.
This is the one and only place it is found in the New Testament.
The word literally means to “restore again” or “to repair”.
The plan of God in sending His Son Jesus was to restore that which had been broken and ruined.
The Lord’s saving work is a global repair job.
Each one of us has come to Him already ruined by sin.
But God’s will and His promise is to restore and renew us through His Son.
This restoration process isn’t a one sided affair.
Having been initiated by the Lord-
– it requires of us humans,
– one essential response, that is,
– repentance!
The passage above draws a clear parallel between repentance and refreshing.
Anyone who has walked with the Lord for a while knows this well.
Repentance brings refreshment, over and over again.
Allow yourself to be refreshed.
Seek the Lord today and let Him show you where you need repentance.
Then, go ahead and make the turn.
And watch how quickly and beautifully you’ll be-
– restored, repaired and refreshed.
Make it a daily habit!
And you’ll find yourself in the stream that leads to eternal life!

Is repentance necessary in the life of the believer?
Yes!
And we see this truth in 1 John 1:9, which says:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Repentance isn’t mentioned in that verse.
But let’s take a closer look.
Remember, “to repent” simply means to change your mind.
For unbelievers, this refers to a decision about where to find security.
But for believers, it involves a change of heart in behaviour or attitude.
Repentance is an ongoing decision to lead an obedient, Christlike life.
In 1 John, this choice is represented by the word confess-
– which originally meant “agree with.”
In other words-
– if you confess your wrongdoing to God, you’re coming into agreement with Him about that sin.
It means to allow God-
– to continually reform your mind and mold you more and more into the image of His Son.
God absolutely hates sin.
So if you agree with Him about sin, then you’re changing your mind about the disobedience in your life.
Thoughts, attitudes, and actions that once seemed perfectly natural will no longer fit who you are.
As God continues to work in your life-
– your mind will gradually reject old thought patterns.
You’ll more closely represent His way of thinking.
Is there sin in your life that has become too much to bear?
Confess it to God!
Allow Him to change your mind about it today.

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:38-39).
When Peter preached the truth about Jesus Christ-
-he left thousands of listeners wondering what they should do next.
The apostle’s response in verse 38 is simple.
He says, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.”
As a result, 3,000 people were added to their numbers that day.
Is this the message of most churches today?
Does it seem strange that Peter said “repent” instead of “believe”?
Scripture often uses these concepts together.
Repentance and faith are two sides of the same coin.
Both are essential for salvation and each is dependent upon the other.
But, in terms of salvation-
– you can’t separate repentance and faith.
To be saved, you must place faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins.
That decision requires a change of mind, or repentance, about your way of life.
Both happen at the same time.
There should actually be no delay or separation between repentance and faith.
Salvation is not by easy believism!
Is the devil a believer?
He believes in Jesus.
He obeys God.
He confesses Christ.
He trembles before Him.
But-
He never repented.
He is not a convert.
He is not a disciple!
There are many believers.
But few converts.
And very few disciples.
They even do not obey God.
They are embarrassed to confess Christ.
They make others tremble!
Are you-
– just a believer?
– or a convert?
– or a disciple?
Do not waste your time in vain!
Become a disciple!
And make disciples!!
