“Thus says the LORD: Refrain your voice from weeping! And your eyes from tears … says the LORD, And they shall come back from the land of the enemy. There is hope in your future, says the LORD, That your children shall come back to their own border” (Jeremiah 31:16-17).

Jesus has redeemed us from all curses! Many of us have been well taught about that redemption where sin, sickness and satan in our own lives are concerned. But we often fail to realize that redemption has power over the destruction the devil tries to bring on our children’s lives as well.

Deuteronomy 28 states the curse of the law in verses 16-68. Notice what that curse says about children. “Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, and your eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be no strength in your land” (v 32).
“You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for they shall go into captivity” (v 41).

Many Christian parents are still suffering needlessly under that curse. Their children are being taken captive by drugs, alcohol and perversions. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Since Jesus broke the curse of the law, these parents have the authority in the Name of Jesus to order satan out of their children’s lives.

Don’t let the devil run roughshod over your children! When you see the first warning signs of rebellion in them, confess the promises of God over them and refuse to give the devil any room to operate. Remember, the children don’t understand the unseen forces that are coming against them. So it’s your responsibility to stand against those forces on their behalf. Exercise that responsibility. Then take every opportunity to minister love to them.

God knows how to deliver your children. Do your part and trust Him to do His. He will bring them back from the land of the enemy! (Isaiah 60:4-5).

“…so that there will not be among you a man or a woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God…” (Deuteronomy 29:18).
There are many enemies within the home-
– seeking to destroy the family.
Let me share a few:
Materialism
People are over-committed, mostly through workaholism,just to make more money.
This is true for all ages with our over-organized children’s activities.
Morals
Approximately 34% of all births in the U.S. are to single moms.
Even in some families that have a dad, he’s often absent or practically non-existent.
Media
Kids spend more time with the TV and internet than they do with their parents.
And its influence can be overwhelmingly negative.
It’s a substitute for family communication.
Internet pornography is devastating marriages and perverting how some men view women.
Parents!
A vibrant relationship with God through Jesus Christ-
– is the best way to battle the many enemies within the home!

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person availeth much” (James 5:17).
One day in the year 387-
– the great church father that played a decisive role in the development of spiritual thinking of the West was baptised.
For his mother Monika-
– it was an answer to a lifetime of prayer.
Augustine was born in the year 387 in North Africa.
His father was not a believer but his mother was a devout Christian.
Her son, however, had an unruly streak in him.
He was undisciplined, more interested in sports than schoolwork and loved the ladies, so much so that he became a father at the age of 18.
Far from learning to be more responsible, he carried on sowing his wild oats.
Meanwhile, his mother worried herself sick about her son, to no avail.
However, she kept praying for him.
Later on he went to Milan in an effort to escape his mother’s watchful eye, but she was too smart for him.
She too came to live in Milan.
There she met the ancient and wise Father Ambrose and told him all about her wayward son.
The words he spoke to her are worth remembering for parents who are concerned about their children’s lifestyles.
“It is not possible for a son for whom so many prayers are said, to remain lost!”
At that time Augustine, already a highly educated and well-read man was sitting in a friend’s garden reading when he heard a child singing, “Take and read.”
He took the Bible and opened it to Romans 13 where he read the passage.
He was so moved by what he read, that at that very moment he became converted.
Ambrose baptised him as well as his son while a mother was comforted at last (God does answer prayers) gratefully stood by.
Her lifelong prayers for her son paid off and saved one of the greatest leaders of the early church for posterity,
Parents, take heart.
Pray without ceasing.
God hears even if it is in his own time.
“Lord, I realise that praying for my child is as important as giving him his daily bread. May I as a parent never forsake my duty. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

“An inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning will not be blessed in the end” (Proverbs 20:21).
The Bible tells us it’s good to leave an inheritance to our children.
But if we focus our inheritance only on money and material possessions, that’s a problem.
The track record on second and third generation wealth is a disaster.
The best way to create a small fortune is to inherit a large one.
Our primary focus should be-
– on posterity,
– not prosperity.
When it comes to our heirs-
– we need to invest in their lives,
– help them to build faith and character,
– teach them hard work, and
– how to handle money wisely.
If all the focus of our inheritance is on prosperity-
– our posterity will be severely handicapped when it comes to faith, responsibility, generosity, and character.
We want to help our children become producers, more than consumers!
That calls for a lot of love, time, and, most of all, a great example.
Parents, when it comes to inheritance-
– what are you going to leave your children?
Let’s leave an inheritance more valuable than money.

“…for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many” (Nehemiah 7:2).
As you think of your future, I have a question.
What do you plan to leave to your heirs?
Stocks and bonds?
Properties?
Investments?
Standard life styles?
As important as planning for the future is-
– there is one fact that so many fail to recognize.
You’re creating a legacy that will live beyond your death.
Your character will continue to speak for good or evil after your life on earth has ended.
“Unquestionable character” is one of the greatest gifts we can leave our heirs.
So many, by concentrating on amassing financial wealth-
– fail to help build honesty, responsibility, compassion, chastity or love for God and their fellow man into the lives of their kids.
Character begins with your example – your life.
It’s more “caught” than “taught!”
But teaching is important, too.
You can’t leave your heirs a greater gift than this.
Wouldn’t you like to know that your life will be remembered for more than your money or property?
What a legacy we leave our kids when they reflect on our lives and say:
“My Mom and Dad kept God in the center of our family life and it showed.
They are the finest people I’ve ever known.”

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).
In his book, A Spiritual Clinic, J. Oswald Sanders wrote about the lasting family legacies of two families from New York.
Two families from the state of New York were studied very carefully.
One was the Max Jukes family.
And the other was the Jonathan Edwards family.
The thing that they discovered in this study is remarkable:
Like begets like.
Max Jukes was an unbelieving man and he married a woman of like character who lacked principle.
And among the known descendants, over 1,200 were studied.
Three hundred and ten became professional vagrants;
440 physically wrecked their lives by debauched lifestyle;
130 were sent to the pen for an average of thirteen years each, 7 of them for murder.
There were over 100 who became alcoholics;
60 became habitual thieves;
190 public prostitutes.
Of the 20 who learned a trade, 10 of them learned the trade in a state prison.
It cost the state about $1,500,000 and they made no contribution whatever to society.
In about the same era the family of Jonathan Edwards came on the scene.
He was a man of God, who married a woman of like character.
The study yielded the following concerning Jonathan Edward’s descendants:
Three hundred became clergymen, missionaries,
And theological professors;
Over 100 became college professors;
Over 100 became attorneys;
30 of them judges;
60 of them became physicians;
Over 60 became authors of good classics;
14 became presidents of universities.
There were numerous giants in American industry that emerged from this family.
Three became United States congressmen and one became the vice president of the United States.
Never forget the impact your life decisions will make-
– in yourself,
– your marriage, and
– on your children.
In ways you will never know in this life-
– you are building a lasting legacy that will last for generations!

“Stand up in the presence of the elderly, show respect for the aged and revere your God. I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:32).
Honour should be given to senior citizens!
Older men and women with years of experience and wisdom must be treated with respect.
So, why does this matter to you since you’re already a senior citizen?
It needs to be passed down to the younger generations.
Children, teenagers, and even some young adults today are being raised without knowledge and practice of this valuable rule.
It is your responsibility to share this with your already grown children, grand children, and even great grandchildren because it’s in the Bible.
“Never speak sharply to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully just as though he were your own father…Treat the older women as mothers” (1 Timothy 5:1-2).
How many young people do you know who truly speak to older adults with the utmost respect?
There aren’t many in today’s society.
There’s no respect for parents, government authority, school educators, much less the elderly.
And while there are exceptions, as a senior adult, you must leave behind the legacy of respect for older generations.
Many young people don’t realize the value in the wisdom and experience that a senior adult can give.
“The glory of young men is their strength; of old men, their experience” (Proverbs 20:29).
If senior adults begin instilling these values into the younger generations-
– the respect you deserve will not be lost.
In Psalm 71:18, the Bible records a senior citizen’s prayer:
“And now that I am old and gray, don’t forsake me. Give me time to tell this new generation (and their children too) about all Your mighty miracles.”
As men and women of age, there is much for you to teach the younger generations.
Don’t delay!
Ask God to show you a young person whom you can mentor-
– and share godly wisdom and experience.

“Honour your father and mother” (Ephesians 6:2).
This is God’s first commandment with a promise!
God doesn’t say to hounour good parents only.
Honour your parents who produced you!
Perhaps the toughest stage of life is parenting our parents!
It’s a role-reversal both parent and child would rather avoid.
The Bible clearly teaches us to honour our parents.
That means caring for them especially when they are old.
Let me suggest a few thoughts:
The greatest gift you can give your aging parents is time.
If physical distance is great, take time to call or write on a regular basis.
Be prayerful and sensitive when parents can no longer care for themselves or their home.
Be honest in helping them think about where they’ll live–be it a retirement center, a nursing home, or with you.
As you face these tough decisions, be motivated by love, not guilt.
Do what they most need, not what you most want.
Honouring our parents sometimes means parenting our parents!
Remember!
We reap what we sow.
One day we hope that our children will have learned from us how to care for us when we are old.
